In the distant future, when humanity has made the leap to the stars, interstellar travel will be as common as international travel is today. Journeys from one stellar system to another are commonplace. However, the tremendous distances involved dictate that interstellar voyages can take weeks, months, sometimes even years. As with 18th-Century Earth, communication is limited to the speed of travel, and the stage is set for adventure in a grand fashion, with all the trappings of classic science fiction: giant star-spanning empires (good, evil, or both), huge starfleets, wily interstellar merchants (or pirates, depending on your viewpoint), complex diplomatic maneuvers, and larger-than-life heroes, heroines, and villains. Set against a background inspired by the science fiction adventures of Poul Anderson, H. Beam Piper, E. C. Tubb, and many more, Traveller presents a huge swath of our Galaxy to be explored, where you can recreate almost any situation you've seen in a science fiction novel, movie, or short story.
Published in 1982, The Traveller Book consolidates the core rules of the three Little Black Books from 1977 into a single book along with additional material on how to play. It includes the short adventures "Shadows" (from Double Adventure 1) and "Exit Visa." Among the many published versions of the original Traveller, to say nothing of the many later editions, this book stands out.
Presented with a full-color poster map of the Imperium sector called the Spinward Marches, originally included with Adventure 00 Imperial Fringe Sector (1983).
